Yavneh II is the second and last excavation report on the dramatic favissa/genizah pit full of Philistine votive objects, discovered by Raz Kletter in the city of Yavneh, Israel, near the Mediterranean coast (south of Tel Aviv). The purpose of this thesis is to collate the data pertaining to these juglets from the excavations of key northern and southern sites within Israel/Palestine (and Jordan where applicable) and analyze this material with the goals of: 1) attaining an understanding of the distribution, types, technology, and function of the juglets 2) presenting the results of this research and 3) bringing the typological results of the research to bear on questions of chronology and dating within the field of biblical and/or Syro-Palestinian archaeology. While the juglets have been treated briefly in many excavation reports, to date there has been no collation or analysis of these unique vessels. ![]() Albright, the juglets were deemed, due to their size, shape, and lack of decoration, to have been used for a commodity such as perfume, oil, or other cosmetic. First discussed in some detail by William F. They make their appearance in the early to mid-Iron Age II, in both northern and southern contexts, and remain in use until the conclusion of the period. Viewed together, the architecture and artifacts reflect an elite household, probably that of a multigenerational family.īlack juglets, so-called for their grayish ware and burnished black slip, have been found in numerous excavations throughout Palestine, specifically Palestine and Transjordan. ![]() Some of the finds from the house are also elite in nature, including two bullae, a cosmetic palette, an incense burner, and several imported jars. While the house shares many characteristics of typical four-room houses, there are also several characteristics that set it apart: it is a large intra muros house (124 m2 ground floor plan in its final phase) it is aloof from the other known four-room houses at Gezer, avoiding shared walls it is near to public buildings and it is east facing. From the distribution of artifacts within the house, several activity areas are identified, mostly domestic in nature: storage space, a kitchen, weaving areas, and a stable. Many of the ground-floor artifacts were discovered in situ, the result of Tiglath-Pileser’s destruction of Gezer in 734/733 BCE.
